Israel Cycling Academy will be the most elite team in the peloton following their recent upgrade to UCI World Tour

One year after moving to the category 2.1 of the Union Cycliste Internationale calendar, the Tour du Rwanda has now reached its cruising speed.

After the participation in 2019 of the Kazakhs of the Team Astana, the World Tour will be again represented on the 12th edition of the Rwandan race from February 23rd to March 1st, 2020 with the new Israel Team, resulting from the fusion between the Russians of Katusha and Israel Academy.

This change of the status has resulted in additional interests from world-class teams who want now to discover the natural and geographical difficulties of Rwandan roads that everyone is talking about, like the famous Wall of Kigali.

The team Total-Direct Energy who discovered Rwanda last February will come back with a solid contingent that will take its landmarks in altitude in Rwanda in the perspective of the major races of the season like the Tour de France.

The Novo Nordisk Team of USA regular on the Rwandan roads and the French Delko-Marseille Team who hosted since 2018 Joseph Areruya, the leader of Rwandan cycling, will be present as well next February with Androni-Giocatolli who trained the young Colombian Egan Bernal winner of the Tour de France 2019. The Italian Team will travel for the first time to Rwanda.

Sixteen teams have been selected for the moment, with a balanced representation from the major cycling nations of the African continent but also world-wide experienced Teams on big events of the international calendar. The organizers will nominate by December 15 the last invited team.

Once again the route promises to be exceptional with long climbs on almost all stages for a total elevation of 17,000 meters including 4,279 the 4th day and three stages to nearly 2,500 meters.

This 12th edition will also see the return of a time trial stage (excluding prologue) for the first time since the first edition in 2009, but this time passing through the wall of Kigali. We will encounter this famous climb the next day for the last stage added to a new spectacular difficulty: the Mount Kigali !
